Dress Code

The District’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards, and teach respect for authority. The Beaumont Independent School District believes that the primary responsibility for student dress and grooming should be vested in the parents and students. For this reason, parents and/or students shall determine personal dress and grooming standards so long as student dress and grooming shall not interfere with, disturb, or detract from school activities. Using these general guidelines and the specific guidelines listed below, school administrators, with the input and support of faculty members, have the final decision in determining and enforcing acceptable student dress and grooming standards at school and at all school-related activities. While not mandatory, uniforms at the high school campuses are highly encouraged to assist in improving the overall learning environment at school.

Specific Guidelines/Restrictions:

Students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard to themselves or others. The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that, in the principal’s or designee’s judgment, may reasonably be expected to cause disruption; clothing that causes an interference with normal school operations or tends to jeopardize the health or safety of students will be prohibited. Clothing must adequately cover the body. Students are not to wear clothing that is tight, loose, revealing, sagging, baggy or short. Examples of unacceptable clothing according to this guideline include, but are not limited to:

• Biker shorts, backless apparel, high slashed skirts, spandex shorts or tights, cut or torn garments, pajamas, oversized shirts, pants, and midriff tops. (Midriff tops are those that reveal bare skin.) Holes of any size in pants are prohibited.
• Inappropriate or potentially inappropriate messages, logos, and designs on any attire including pants and shirts are prohibited.
• Specifically, the District prohibits pictures, emblems, or writings on clothing that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene. Clothing is prohibited that advertises or depicts tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under FNCF (LEGAL).
• Students are prohibited from wearing clothing that is typically worn for athletic purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, jogging shorts, chubbies, or wind shorts. A student is prohibited from wearing any form of dress, or hairstyles, tracks in eyebrows, having a visible tattoo, or accessory identifying him or her with a gang or cult or symbolizing the beliefs of such a group.
• Clothing shall be worn with suitable under clothing at all times. Undergarments shall be worn in such a manner as not to be visible.
• Cleanliness of body is expected of all students. Hair should be clean and neatly groomed. It should not cover the eyes or be colored or styled in any way, which attracts undue attention. This includes colored or bleached portions of hair.
• Shoes appropriate for school should be worn at all times and must not present a safety or health hazard. Examples of unacceptable shoes according to this guideline include, but are not limited to, house shoes, flip-flops or slippers. Shoes must be tied or fastened according to the shoe style. Shoes which produce loud noises or damage to floors are prohibited.
• No type of cap, hat, bandanna, head scarf or headband is allowed in the buildings. Exceptions would be a cap or hat that is part of a uniform at a school activity or a head covering worn for religious purposes. Official documentation must be presented to support such a claim.
• Pierced earrings are allowed, but all other body piercing jewelry is strictly prohibited.
• Dark glasses, except those which are medically prescribed, are not permitted.
• Wallet chains, oversized chains, and dog collars are not permitted.

While the student and parent may determine the student’s personal dress and grooming standards, they must comply with the general guidelines set out above and with the student dress code outlined by the campus. Students who violate the dress code will not be allowed to return to class until the violation has been corrected. A second violation will be considered defiant behavior. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student will be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

Extracurricular Activities - The principal, in cooperation with the sponsor, coach, or other person in charge of an extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate dress and grooming standards established for such an activity may be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the principal or sponsor and may be subject to other disciplinary action, as specified in the Student Code of Conduct. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
